Kingston B v Vipers, 20 February Vipers travelled to Grimsby to play Kingston on Saturday. For most of the girls this was their first visit to this rink, and
personally I whope that it will be my last! Having lost to Kingston during their earlier encounter at the NIC, it was time for revenge
but it wasn't going to be easy on the small ice surface (approximately 1/3 of the size of the NIC rink). From an outsiders' point of view, the Vipers had more of the puck; however once the puck was cleared from the zone, this
generally led to a shot at the other end, which meant the Vipers never felt completely in control of the game. It was a scarppy, stop-start
game, where a series of nice, passing and interchanges just never seemed to materialize. Kingston scored the only goal of the second period - a deflection of one of our own players. Vipers didn't quit however, and their efforts
were finally rewarded in the third period, when Cookie found the net. The last few minutes of the game saw some chances at either end, with
Maya coming up with some big saves, and Vipers coming close at the other. Unfortunately, the winning goal never came for the Vipers. The draw for
the Vipers' league aspirations is significant but not entirely detrimental. The long and the short of it is that Vipers have to now
win all of their 5 remaining league games to finish top. It is still theirs for the taking, and only time will tell if Vipers can
remain calm and see it through to the end of the season. The three bench coaches from the game attended the post-match press conference to answer questions from the eagerily awaiting
media.
Reporter 1: After your last couple of wins you must really feel that this is a disappointing result. What is the attitude
in the changing room?
Coach PJ: Of course they are disappointed. They came here determined to win and it just didn't happen today. It is how
you bounce back from disappointment that proves just how strong a team is. They now just have a point to prove.
Reporter 2: Can you point out what went wrong today?
Coach JS: They battled hard, and this is a difficult rink to play in. They didn't do too much wrong. Both goalies made some good saves, and
we just didn't get the bounce of the puck today. Not too many teams will come here and get a good results.
Reporter 3: So, you are fairly content with the draw?
Coach Romek: [Said something in Polish that nobody understood!]
Reporter 1: Where do you go from here?
Coach PJ: Nottingham! Train hard, and get ready for Sheffield. It won't be an easy game, and now every game is critical.
Reporter 2: Are you going to mix things up for the Sheffield game?
Coach JS: I wouldn't tell you even if I was...shut uuuppppp [accompanied with some strange hand gesture]!!
