Flintshire 09th November
Vipers travelled to Flintshire on Sunday to play their third game of the season. After beating Sheffield away a fortnight ago,
Vipers were hopefull they could maintain their undefeated status as they had two players returning to their line-up;
however, they were without Julia Coughill, whose shoulder injury is back, and unfortunately back
with vengeance. Despite being injured, Julia made the trip to Flintshire to urge-on her team, and open the gate (using her good arm!!).
The game started off slowly, with Vipers struggling to maintain possession and Flintshire were quite happy to play a frustrating game tactic. It worked too.
There were too few shots on goal as a result. However, nearing the end of the first, a 3 on 2 opportunity arose, and as Hannah
Worthington and Jade Cito (playing upfront to cover for the injured Julia) crashed the net, Hannah managed to deflect the pass from Anna
to score the first of vipers' goals.
After the break, things didn't improve much. Legs just didn't seem to be moving quickly, and whilst Flintshire players held their
positions, Vipers...didn't. Vipers missed a few good opportunities, but Flintshire kept posing problems on the break. Neither side managed
to gain control of the game, and the second period finished goaless.
There was still hope that the game could be turned around, in the sense of performance on the ice. Some good hustling work from line 2 finally
resulted in Vipers extending their lead to 2, with a goal (2nd of the season) by Rebecca Cooke. Cooke quickly followed this by another first...
first ever pentalty minutes. Now a true hockey player, her good hardwork would later earn her the MOM award.
No more scoring was to be seen, and the game ended in a 2-0 win, but all admit it was not the greatest performance.
Coach Romek was not at all pleased with the performance. He refused to answer media questions and attend the post-match interview!
His thoughts will be kept to himself...unless you ask him. And then he'll tell you. Warning: it may take a while!!!
