Flintshire 07th February

Vipers came out victorious in their first away trip to Flintshire this season. They were without some of their regular players: our Alternate Captain, Jade Cito (playing in the snow), and Kerry Lowe (studying for exams). Thankfully, Laura Urquart donned the Vipers kit and had a great game playing in D for us for the first time this season. Many thanks go to all the spectators and coaches that travelled with us to Wales, and spurred us on to our memorable victory. So memorable in fact, that I have decided to write a poem about it...

Twas the road trip to Flintshire, that started the day
Only the coach was believing the game we would play.
A bad film was played on the TV above,
Whilst Anna dreamed sweet dreams of Mr D-Love!

The Vipers weren't nested all snug in their beds,
But visions of victory did dance in their heads.
Late Bernie was threatened with talks of the Bench...
...With Hannah and Anna and our little French.

The team talk delivered, the master plan conveyed
On Cookie's shirt a brand new 'A' was displayed.
The adrenaline rife, the nerves hung in the air,
Laura back in the realm was muttering a prayer.

When were the hockey gods going to appear?
Would they bring us goals, or just a crate of cold beer?
The referee was dressed in his stripes black and white,
The puck was dropped and Flintshire gave us a fright.

Within the first few shifts the puck was fired in our net,
Due to nerves I'm sure..well, its a fairly safe bet.
Then along came Smithy to score her first goal.
And then the Vipers confidence began to roll!

Now Micky! Now Glossy! Now Lucy and Hannah!
On Bernie! On Frency! On Cookie and Anna!
Heads up! Quick feet! Keep sticks on the floor!
Now backcheck! Backcheck! Backcheck some more.

We were dressed all in black from our head to our feet,
Julia's hat-trick made our fans rise from their seats.
A bundle of assists to Laura the rookie(!),
And not to be outdone - so a hat-trick from Cookie!

With the referee clearly not on our side,
Our penalty minute tally started to climb.
Battling hard on the boards, we came out with the puck.
Due to hard work alone, not the aforementioned luck.

His eyes-how they twinkled! His dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His curves of his mouth turning into a grin,
And yet he still bellowed to his team 'Never give in!

Vipers forging forward as the goals came galore.
Ten was our total, and 3 against was the score!
Behind our defense, always standing strong and tall
Was our deserving man-of-the-match, Maya the "wall".

Jenson at the wheel, and the journey back was quick.
Still the smiles beamed from coach JS, aka Chick.
We all heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight,
"Well played to you all, and to you all, a good-night!"
