Blackburn 28th September

Vipers entertained Blackburn on Sunday as a start to their 2008/09 Division 1 North title defence. A change to the format of the D1 league this year means that Blackburn and Nottingham will only play each other twice this season and this was the first of those encounters. It was crucial that the Vipers got off to a good, solid start to their season. A goal in the first shift of the game: long range effort from Helen tipped in by Anna should have settled any early nerves. This lead was doubled as Helen strode forward shortly afterwards and finished off her good work. However, a series of penalties (4 in total), caused a passage of penalty kills and scrappy play and let Blackburn reduce the lead to just 1 at the end of the first period.

The second period was a much brighter affair. Good passes and positional play, topped with better discipline and finishing, meant that Vipers took control of the game both on the ice and on the score board. The end of the second saw Frenchy following up her own shot to poke in the rebound, to score her 1st of the season and leave Vipers going into the second interval with a 6-2 lead.

The second interval initiated a team nutritional experiment by the tasting of a certain brand of Jellified sweets promoted by some NIHC coaching staff to reduce lactic acid build-up. So, the third period started with a couple of players feeling a little sick after their sweeties but they still managed to put on a good display. The good teamwork, and passing continued as more players earned their first points of the season. Goals were scored by Julia and Hannah, before the second line's hard work finally paid off with a goal being scored by Bernie, with the assists going to Cookie and Michelle. An ankle injury to Wilko mid-way through the third period, caused a few line changes, but she battled through to play on to the final whistle. Vipers had a penalty drawn against them (Frenchy 2 minutes for roughing) at the end of the game after she had been 2-handed by a Blackburn player. (The Blackburn player should be thankful that Frenchy hadn't taken her new Rape Alarm onto the ice and deafened her with it!!). Vipers held on to win the final period 3-1, and the final result was a 9-3 victory.

Coach Romek was pleased with the result and effort of all the players. In the post-match interview, he acknowledged that whilst there were many areas in which alot of work was still needed, he was very pleased with both the committment that the players have had in the build up to the game and their attidudes on the ice and on the bench.

The new captain of the team admitted that although she was ecstatic with the win, she was bitterly disappointed with the results of the jellified sweet experiment. She is uncertain as to whether to pull the clinical trial in its early stages, or continue to see if any clear results are produced in the upcoming games!!!
