Billingham 19th January

Vipers played Billingham at home on Sunday. Billingham travelled with their small, but strong, squad to try and repeat their victory over the Vipers earlier in the season when they won by a 2-goal margin in a tightly contested affair. Billingham started off the game brightly as they put pressure on the Vipers net in the opening minutes. Some good goaltending, by Alison Clark, made sure the opening pressure didn't reflect on the scoreboard.

Vipers then started to get into the game, but found themselves 0-1 down mid-way through the first. This lead was quickly drawn back to 1-1 as Vipers managed to convert on their 5 on 3 powerplay, as a smart pass from Laura Quarton saw Anna break up the ice, and this time she managed to put the puck in the back of the net. A tied game at the end of the first, and the game was far from over.

Vipers had a few good chances in the second, but were unable to convert. Then, vipers finding themselves on the penalty kill, let their shape slip and Billingham for the second time, went ahead. Vipers players on the ice (Cookie imparticularly) managed to keep their heads when all around them were losing theirs (and by that, I mean me and I do sincerely apologise to anyone and everyone I offended in my 2 minutes of complete meltdown!).

The third period almost saw Vipers trying too hard to draw the game, and as a result they lost some of their positional play. This combined with a few missed chances, meant that Billingham were able to hold on to their 1-goal lead. However, it was a nail biting finish, as Ally made some good saves to keep the game alive. The final shots on goal, saw Billingham outshooting the Vipers by 2 shots to 1. This lack of shooting opportunites, clearly leading to Vipers downfall.

It was not a good night at the NIC. Firstly the Panthers lost...then the Vipers. Both coaches refused to speak to the media following the game - they both instead drowned their sorrows in the bar (well, I don't think either of them drink, so that isn't really that likely, but perhaps they should have done). However, only a game was lost. The season is not over. There are games still to be played, and leagues still to be won!

And just remember...as someone more poetic than myself once said... "When we long for a life without without difficulties, remind us that oaks grow strong in contrary winds and diamonds are made under pressure"! Victories are only sweet after you have tasted defeat. Next week...
